Smallest Hearts, Biggest Impacts - Adelita's Story

Sometimes, the smallest hearts make the biggest impact. Recently, the United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois learned of two families in urgent need of baby formula, diapers, clothing — all the essentials. With Central Illinois Christians In Mission, Inc. already stepping in to help with their basic home needs, we reached out to a few community members for additional support. One of those people was Adelita’s mom, who went shopping for formula and other necessities. But when 9-year-old Adelita heard what was needed, she did something truly special — she chose to spend her own birthday money to buy clothing for the baby and children. Together, they arrived with a huge bag full of clothes, comfort, and kindness. Adelita may only be 9, but she is already making a beautiful difference in the lives of families right here in our community.

Thank you, Adelita, for showing us what compassion looks like.

Because of you, something truly incredible happened. United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois was able to provide $21,000 to Decatur Catholic Charities strengthening two vital programs that protect and uplift some of the most vulnerable seniors in our community. Elderly Guardianship Program This program steps in when seniors can no longer safely make decisions on their own. After physicians and the court determine an individual’s capacity, Catholic Charities becomes their advocate—helping guide decisions that affect their health, safety, home, finances, and overall well-being. ElderCare Options Program. This program supports adults 60+ with disabilities, mental illness, or trauma—and adults 50+ with developmental disabilities. Whether through a court-appointed guardian or additional oversight services, these individuals receive protection, advocacy, and the dignity they deserve.

This is the impact of your giving. You helped ensure vulnerable seniors in our area are safe, supported, and cared for with compassion.

Thank you for standing with us and for making this work possible.
