There is increasing evidence that the Black community and other minority groups are at increased risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19. For instance, African Americans make up 18% of the Macon County population, yet account for 34% of COVID-19 cases.
In addition, African Americans are more likely to be adversely affected by the virus due to pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and high blood pressure. Also, people from some racial and ethnic minority groups are disproportionately represented in essential work settings such as healthcare facilities, factories, grocery stores, and public transportation. Some people who work in these settings have more chances to be exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.
Protect yourself, your family and your community. Wear a mask when in public, indoors and when not able to socially distance from others. For more information,
